ABOVE: Yale Radio Club president James Douglas (‘55),operates W1YU in the basement of Hendrie Hall in this photograph published in the Yale Daily News on 9/30/53. Notice the club’s massive National NC183D receiver to Jim’s left.

The accompanying article stated that W1YU would send free messages for Yale students “by radio to the girls of their choice at Vassar, Smith and Connecticut College any evening of the week.”  Was this the dawn of social networking?  Not only did the internet not exist back then, long distance telephone calls were very expensive!

Want to know more about W1YU history?  Then plan on attending the W1AF-W1YU Harvard-Yale joint presentation at the Boxboro hamfest at 10:00 am on Sunday, September 11 in the Director’s Room to learn more about our club’s history and plans for the future.
